Iowa Facts

Based in Wichita, Kan., Koch Industries, Inc. is one of the largest private companies in America according to Forbes magazine. It owns a diverse group of companies involved in refining, chemicals and biofuels; process and pollution control equipment and technologies; minerals; fertilizers; polymers and fibers; commodity trading and services; forest and consumer products; and ranching. Koch companies have a presence in nearly 60 countries and employ about 67,000 people. Since 2003, Koch companies have invested about $45 billion in acquisitions and other capital expenditures.

Companies in Iowa

  • Flint Hills Resources, LLC, through its subsidiaries, is a leading refining and chemicals company. Its subsidiaries market products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol, biofuels, olefins, polymers and intermediate chemicals, as well as base oils and asphalt. Subsidiaries have an ofice in Ames and operates ethanol plants in Iowa Falls, Fairbank, Menlo and Shell Rock. The plants have a combined annual capacity of 435 million gallons of ethanol. Another subsidiary operates three asphalt plants in Iowa at Algona, Davenport and Dubuque. The plants provide road construction departments and contractors with liquid asphalt. Another subsidiary distributes refined fuel throughout the state and operates a terminal in Bettendorf.

  • Koch Pipeline Company, L.P. owns and operates the Wood River Pipeline, a portion of which crosses Iowa. The pipeline originates in Illinois and then moves through northern Missouri, before continuing through central Iowa. The pipeline transports crude oil to refineries in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This pipeline is a part of more than 4,000 miles of pipelines owned or operated by Koch Pipeline Company.

  • Georgia-Pacific companies have facilities in Dubuque and Monticello that manufacture corrugated containers and a facility in Fort Dodge that produces gypsum panels for residential and commercial construction. Georgia-Pacific LLC, based in Atlanta, and its subsidiaries have about 300 manufacturing facilities across North America, South America and Europe, ranging from large pulp, paper and tissue operations to gypsum plants, box plants and building products operations.

  • Koch Nitrogen Company, LLC owns and operates a fertilizer plant in Fort Dodge and terminals in Fort Madison, Marshalltown, Washington, Garner and Sergeant Bluff. The company and its affiliates have the capability to market and distribute more than 13 million metric tons of nitrogen products annually.

Safety and Environmental Commitment

  • Flint Hills Resources’ terminals in Iowa were among those recognized with the Platinum Safety Award from the International Liquid Terminals Association. The award recognizes member companies that have a strong commitment to continuous safety improvement. The Iowa terminals have also received safety awards from the National Safety Council and the Iowa Illinois Safety Council.

  • Koch Pipeline Company, L.P. received the 2010 Distinguished Award for Outstanding Safety and Environmental Performance from the American Petroleum Institute, its highest award. KPL’s safety record has also been recognized with API’s Occupational Safety Award, the National Safety Council’s Occupational Industry Leader Award, and numerous awards from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council. The company was named one of America’s Safest Companies by EHS Today magazine in 2008. In March 2011, employees reached 10 years, which equals nearly 7 million work hours, without a lost-time incident.

  • Georgia-Pacific’s Monticello plant received STAR certification in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs for its outstanding performance.

  • Koch Nitrogen Company has earned the Stewardship Award for safe shipping from Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company for three consecutive years. It has also earned the Safe Handling Award from the Canadian National Railway Company. The Fort Dodge, Iowa, site has earned the Incident Rate Excellence Award from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council.

Community Commitment
Koch companies are committed to understanding the needs of the community and participating in projects and activities that add value to their neighbors. Here are some examples:

  • A Koch Nitrogen Company challenge grant will fund the purchase of a washer/extractor and dryer to clean the Fort Dodge Fire Department’s protective gear. The $10,600 challenge grant includes $5,000 from Koch Nitrogen Company and $5,600 raised by the City of Fort Dodge. The Salix Fire Department received a grant of $2,500 to help purchase an incident command truck.

  • Through the Georgia-Pacific Foundation, the company partners with many local and statewide organizations to improve the quality of life in communities where GP employees live and work. The GP Foundation focuses support in four key areas: education, enrichment of community, environment and entrepreneurship.

  • Koch Nitrogen Company contributed $2,500 for the Webster County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Brushy Creek Project.
